    Languages

    Intent

    • Confident to speak with good intonation and pronunciation.
    • Begin to develop fluency in reading and writing.
    • A strong awareness of the culture of France.
    • A passion for and commitment to languages.
    • The ability to use languages creatively and spontaneously.
    • To understand the diversity of French culture.

    Implementation

    • French is taught in Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2.
    • There is a two-year cycle for Key Stage 1, then a four-year cycle of Key Stage 2.
    • Long term planning that is carefully tailored to the curriculum drivers whilst completing the National Curriculum Programme of study.
    • Kapow scheme of learning has been adopted for Key stage 1 and Key Stage 2 languages.
    • Key Stage 1 languages focus on learning French through songs.
    • Specific vocabulary teaching within lessons.
    • Specific French phonics teaching within lessons.
    • Teaching of conjugation of key verbs to accurately express person, tense and intent.
    • Alternative methods of communication are taught within school e.g. Makaton and Sign Language

    Knowledge and Understanding:

    The children’s understanding and knowledge of languages will be broadened through the teaching of the following key concepts.

    • Describing ourselves.
    • Articulating our interests and hobbies.
    • Describing our family.
    • Geographical and cultural understanding.

    Impact

    • Children are confident to communicate in French, Makaton or Sign Language.
    • Confident, independent and resilient learners.
    • Rich vocabulary that reflects their learning.
    • Children have a strong understanding of diversity in the world.
    • Improved cultural capital.
